The day is over. The kid is asleep. You should be resting.

Instead, you’re lying in the dark running a mental list of everything you didn’t do. Didn’t read the bedtime story. Lost patience at dinner. Didn’t ask about their day at school. Raised your voice earlier, when you didn’t need to. Was on your phone when they wanted attention.

And the feeling that lingers isn’t tiredness. It’s that voice: I should have done more.
